In Episode 55 of the podcast, Doug and Dirty A discuss what will probably be the biggest movie of the year in Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1. Then the discussion turns to a pair of indie films: the intense Whiplash and Jon Stewart’s Rosewater, before finishing up with a chat about Horrible Bosses 2. This episode was recorded pre-Thanksgiving, so that’s why the whole episode isn’t just a huge freakout over the new Star Wars trailer. That will be next episode. Thanks for listening!
Ever since it hit the festival circuit earlier this year, I’ve heard nothing but good things about Writer-Director Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash. Even the poster is heaped with quotes of praise from various critics. The question is, does the film live up to the hype? Yes, and then some. In fact, Whiplash may just be the best film of the year.
I compiled a list of films that I want to see for the last third of the year and came up with thirty-six titles. Unfortunately, I just don’t have the time to churn out an article of that size right now—self-publishing your first novel is a time-drain, kids. So instead, I selected thirteen films that I’m most looking forward to from September through December. As I’ve done with all my preview features in the past, I’ll list the titles in current release date order, but the one I’m most excited for rhymes with “winter cellar.”
